Studio Voltaire
Studio Voltaire is one of the UK’s leading not–for–profit arts organisations, founded in 1994 by a collective of twelve artists. In October 2021, Studio Voltaire completed a £2.8 million capital project to expand and redevelop its site and programmes, the most ambitious transition in the organisation’s 27–year history.
The project addressed the current London–wide shortage of artists’ workspace, increasing affordable artists’ studios by 42%. New onsite facilities also include an artists’ kitchen, workshop, project studio, and two residency studios that host an international programme. Public space has increased by 233% with new additions including a public garden, a dedicated learning and events space, shop and café.
The Mila Charitable Organisation directly supported The Communal Studio, housing ten artists in a dedicated, light–filled studio space providing an important lower–priced alternative for artists who do not need a traditional studio. These spaces also allow for the provision of additional cultural workers including curators, writers and educators, further contributing to Studio Voltaire’s vibrant and varied studio culture.
